The character reference of the speaker changes from the beginning of the poem to the end. At the beginning the character is unsure in his words and actions, cant piddle an answer to his questions: I acceptt sock, I usurpt know where it came from, from winter or a river. I dont know how or when, I did non know what to say. The character has also lost his identity: thither I was without a face, my eyes were ruse.

By the end of the poem, the speaker finds hi mself as occasion of something, part of the deflect, mystery, part of the abyss.
